Acid Vatican - Never Forget How to Bear

Updated: May 9, 2020

The mere concept of Acid Vatican promises a darkly psychedelic world of inversion -- a place where an inhuman pontiff lords over a giallo-drenched Unholy See. Their 2018 EP Psychoterrorpriest suggested this Jodorowsky-esque vision and their 2019 album Never Forget How to Bear delivers it.

Acid Vatican is the work of Antoni Maiovvi and Vercetti Technicolor -- both Italo-Disco veterans I've loved for years (alas, my past blog posts on their work are now lost). Each in their own way, Maiovvi and Vercetti Technicolor capture the VHS-era of synth horror scores from pulsing tension and pounding madness to more sublime and ambient realms of dread.

I could keep going on about how their Acid Vatican sound captures the feeling of Satanic Death Squads chasing you through Roman alleyways in order to harvest your skull, but perhaps I should deliver some audio...

That's Repent Motherfucker, also featured on the Psychoterrorpriest EP, and it indeed delivers a suspenseful jaunt that at once summons Euro-horror vibes while feeling wholly unique -- dangerous and apocalyptic. The label, aufnahme + wiedergabe, also spliced the track with scenes from Ken Russell's 1971 masterpiece The Devils, which you'll find right here.

The release is solid from beginning to end, but to draw your attention to another track, I have to single out Nzambi Ritualen, which interoperates an even more brutal, metal-infused sound. Think of this as your skull removal track...

If these sounds are new to you, I highly recommend you seek out Maiovvi and Vercetti Technicolor (Avrokosm and Black September, if you want specific releases). As for Acid Vatican, I look forward to future horrors. You can grab the album on Bandcamp, Spotify or wherever you get your music.
