Stop-motion legend Jan Svankmajer's take on Alice's Adventures in Wonderland...
In this episode of Weirdhouse Cinema, I'm joined by guest co-host Seth (host of the podcast Rusty Needle's Record Club) to discuss Czech stop-motion legend Jan Svankmajer's 1988 adaptation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It's certainly a weird jaunt through Wonderland, but it's also numerous and not un-child-friendly.
We have a good time discussing stop-motion animation in general, the line between creepy and cute, and the strange soundscape of Alice, which is at once almost completely devoid of music, but which also has a kind of ambient industrial quality to its Foley work. Drink up:
Next week on Weirdhouse Cinema, Anney Reese will join me to discuss the 1995 action film Congo, based on the novel by Michael Crichton. In the meantime, be sure to check out the merch store and follow us on Letterboxd! All the movies we've covered are listed there in our list and you can click "read notes" to get links to the individual episodes posted here.
