Dive into the gothic horror of Juraj Herz's 1978 adaptation of the fairytale...
This week on Weirdhouse Cinema, we continue with Czech cinema for another week in Juraj Herz's 1978 adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. The film features strong flavors of 1970s gothic horror, Czech new wave cinema and of course traditional fairy tale. As a result, it's hard to predict where this journey is ultimately going to take you, but it's a beautiful journey brought to the screen with a master's attention to detail.
The last two weeks have featured some artsier efforts from filmmakers, so next week we're going to balance all of that out with 1953's Robot Monster. In the meantime, be sure to check out the merch store and follow us on Letterboxd! All the movies we've covered are listed there in our list and you can click "read notes" to get links to the individual episodes posted here.
