Blade the vampire hunter puts all suckheads on notice in this 1998 action-horror film...
Yep, once more we’re venturing towards the end of the millennium and considering a film from the late 1990s. It’s 1998’s BLADE, a movie about a half vampire -- or dhampir -- who fights vampires to protect mortals from their ravenous thirst.
It’s a notable film in the evolution of modern superhero movies as it’s sort of the precursor to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But unlike the PG era of Marvel films and even the darker DC films that have more in common with it, Blade was rated R and everyone's favorite vamp slayer can say the f as much as he wants.
But BLADE is also a very fun action horror movie that by-and-large excels at what it sets out to do, involves some splendid performances and feels like it walks a thin line between self-seriousness and comedy in a way that really works. Wesley Snipes is especially good as the titular vampire hunter, and Donal Logue has a memorable part as the vampire lackey Quinn.
Super enjoyable film and it was a really fun one to talk about. We even discuss the upcoming MCU Blade film a little bit and I'll add that while I would prefer that Mahershala Ali's Blade gets to run around without any additional MCU characters, I would make an exception if these are sequences in which he teaches them to say the f for the first.
OK, what's next on Weirdhouse Cinema? We're still looking at some ideas. In the meantime, be sure to check out the merch store and follow us on Letterboxd!
