Nothing says Christmas quite like a psychic samurai poltergeist...
This is Weirdhouse Cinema's second trip through December, so it's finally time to cover a holiday film -- or sorts. The 1983 film Bloodbeat takes place during Christmas in rural Wisconsin. It's a tale of family holiday anxiety, Shining-esque powers and of course a powerful Japanese poltergeist that might be a psychic projection from a past life, a collectively summoned entity based on societal guilt or... well, we don't have much to go on, so it could be anything. Maybe it's the spirit of Christmas itself.
It's a wonderfully weird film that perhaps trips over its own ambition a bit, but in most rewarding ways. While technically a Christmas slasher film of sorts, it's not nearly as nasty as many of the entries in that genre. Make it your new holiday tradition, won't you?
You can stream Bloodbeat via Apple TV and similar services -- plus the excellent Bluray from Vinegar Syndrome is still available for purchase. What's next on Weirdhouse Cinema? Why, we'll be continuing our holiday viewing with the classic 1964 Russian fantasy Morozko (aka Jack Frost).
