Weirdhouse Cinema: Diabolik

A super-crime power couple defends their love against the world...

We have a really fun one for you this week on Weirdhouse Cinema! Join us as we return to the phantasmagorical world of Mario Bava with the stylish, sexy 1968 crime thriller “Danger: Diabolik,” starring John Phillip Law and Marisa Mell. It's a movie full of outrageous action and outrageous style, all realized through the lens of a master director, accentuated by Ennio Morricone's terrific score.

The youthful rebellion energy of this film is strong. Certainly, there’s the hippie vibe of the late 60s, but also – at heart – we have a pair of young lovers -- our power couple -- for whom all this crime is mere foreplay, for whom money is a mere tool in their romance. It's the same money that serves as all-consuming and all-corrupting power of the elder authorities on both sides of the law that oppose them. Their enemies – now united and maybe not that dissimilar – come after their love, but they underestimate its power.

What's up next on Weirdhouse Cinema? We're working on it. In the meantime, be sure to check out the merch store and follow us on Letterboxd! All the movies we've covered are listed there in our list and you can click "read notes" to get links to the individual episodes posted here.
