Cyber-panic explodes on the screen in this 1993 sci-fi thriller...
This week on Weirdhouse Cinema, we're diving headfirst into the world of cyber panic. The film is 1993's Ghost in the Machine, in which a serial killer is zapped into the grid when lighting strikes an MRI machine. Yeah! We didn't intentionally time this release with the publication of the new video game Cyberpunk 2077, but we'll totally accept the cyber-serendipity of this.
As we discuss in the episode, this is just one example of the many 90s thrillers that played on our misunderstandings and fears regarding the blooming internet age. The Net, The Lawnmower Man, Virtuosity... they're all solid examples and Ghost in the Machine totally delivers. It was directed by Rachel Talalay and stars Karen Allen and Chris Mulkey. It also features the most Poochy teen character you'll ever encounter. Check this trailer:
Additional notes: I finished Tank Girl and, yeah, can't say I loved it. Also, the Woman Versus Computer video from Everything is Terrible can be found right here:
You can buy or rent the movie anywhere you get your digital goods, and you'll find the Weirdhouse Cinema in the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast feed -- or right here:
As for next week? We'll be celebrating the holidays with a viewing of 1986's mall sci-fi thriller Chopping Mall. So watch it and then tune in.
