Weirdhouse Cinema: Godzilla vs. Hedorah

Updated: Jun 29, 2022

Get ready for the avant-garde 1971 Godzilla bash...

In this episode of Weirdhouse Cinema, we discuss 1971’s Godzilla vs. Hedorah, also known as Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster. The king of all monsters tears it up with a pollution-powered alien kaiju in an avant-garde kaiju movie with a strong environmental message.

I'd never seen this one before and I already think it's up there with Shin Godzilla on my favorites list. While the final monster battle goes on a bit long, the rest of the film sparkles with strong visuals and a hip, late-60s vibe that I wasn't quite expecting. Let's hit the trailer and then the podcast episode itself:

We discuss the music in this one a bit -- namely the track Give Back the Sun! Performed by pop singer-turned-actor Keiko Mari, you can listen to it in all its glory whereever you stream your music. Here's the Spotify:

In this episode of Weirdhouse, I speculate that the English language version -- with lyrics by Guy Hemric -- would soften the environmental message. This turns out to be far from the case, however! Thanks to listener James for writing in about that.

This marks our first Criterion Collection film on Weirdhouse Cinema, so you can watch the film as part of their killer boxed set -- or stream it like we did from HBO Max's TCM collection.

We have full Weirdhouse Merch now over at the Teepublic store, by the way. And for next week, I'm not sure yet, but I'm pressing Joe to possibly go with one of two Brad Dourif movies. We'll see. We've also been talking about shark movies.
