Weirdhouse Cinema: Highway to Hell

Take the next exit and proceed straight to 1991...

Highway to Hell is a weird film. Essentially a horror comedy, it manages to deliver some compelling MTV-era dark pop fantasy along with some solid horror notes.

There are plenty of goofy, unexpected creative choices to keep you interested throughout -- as well as some fun cameos from the likes of Gilbert Gottfried and the entire Stiller family -- but HELLCOP sizzles at the heart of this picture.

Who's Hellcop? Well, he's just your average highway patrolman form the pits of hell, burnt and scarred with infernal inscriptions, wielding a portal gun and driving a suped-up magic Robocop car around. As Joe and I discuss in the episode, the character might not actually work outside of the liberating tone of a horror comedy, but it's easy to get excited about the possibilities.

As I mention in the episode, the score features tracks by Tangerine Dream -- which Michael Weldon tells us are from the 1989 film Miracle Mile. I haven't seen this one and so I can't speak to its score all that much, but the tracks in Highway to Hell that I suspect are TD tracks certainly help elevate the otherworldly notes of the film. Here's the Miracle Mile score (which is mostly avalible physically right now) if you want to explore for yourself:

Next episode of Weirdhouse in the 1981 snake movie Venom.
