Weirdhouse Cinema: Invention for Destruction

Venture into the Vernian retro-future of Karel Zeman's 1958 masterpiece...

Once more we venture into the world of Czech cinema, this time to discuss Invention for Destruction (AKA The Fabulous World of Jules Verne) by the great Karel Zeman. It's a stunningly realized picture that embraces artificiality and stylized, handcrafted special effects to create a retro-futurist adventure yarn that looks and feels like the illustrations in a 19th century Jules Verne book come to life. This one is certainly worth viewing in the best quality possible, such as via the Second Run Blu-ray or the Criterion Channel.

Up next on Weirdhouse Cinema, we MIGHT be continuing with weird Czech films, but I need to do some research on it first. In the meantime, be sure to check out the merch store and follow us on Letterboxd! All the movies we've covered are listed there in our list and you can click "read notes" to get links to the individual episodes posted here.
