Weirdhouse Cinema: Jason X

Our 100th film selection takes us into a new millennium of cinema...

On Friday the 13th of last week, we published our 100th film selection -- and it also happens to be out first film pick from the 21st century. We figured 2001's Jason X was the perfect movie to check off all these boxes.

Jason X has a lot of great things going for it that make it perfect for discussion. It took an established, languishing horror franchise into the future -- and interstellar space. It earned the ire of contemporary critics and audiences, while also developing its own cult following. The cast features a number of up-and-coming Canadian actors, as well as a fun action role from Peter Mensah and cameos by both David Cronenberg and Robert A. Silverman. The effects are perhaps a mixed bag, the film's look very set in its time, but the tone manages to walk a nice line between horror fun and outright parody.

Next up on Weirdhouse Cinema, we'll be returning to the world of Czech cinema! In the meantime, be sure to check out the merch store and follow us on Letterboxd! All the movies we've covered are listed there in our list and you can click "read notes" to get links to the individual episodes posted here.
