Weirdhouse Cinema: Krull

It's time to Krull it up big time with the the majestic 1983 fantasy film...

This week on Weirdhouse Cinema, we continue our journey through the wild world of 1980s fantasy films with 1983's Krull! This one is a frequent listener request and a movie dear to both our hearts. While it didn't win audiences over upon release, it's become a cult film over time and a lot of us grew up on its strange mix of fantasy and sci-fi, of stilted plotting and solid acting, of generic adventure and cosmic weirdness. It's a film with many opposing forces in it and we love it.

There's not a lot of tie-in media for this one as the film offers more than enough to talk about -- mostly from a visual perspective. The sets are simply amazing, both in conception and execution. A pretty great cast backs all of this up, including Weirdhouse favorite Alun Armstrong and two actors from David Lynch's Dune: Freddie Jones and Francesca Annis. Oh yeah, and we talk about the video game a little bit:

What's up next on Weirdhouse Cinema? I'm campaigning hard for Lucio Fulci's 1983 fantasy film Conquest to continue our recent trend. If not, I have a back-up in mind. In the meantime, be sure to check out the merch store and follow us on Letterboxd! All the movies we've covered are listed there in our list and you can click "read notes" to get links to the individual episodes posted here.
