Weirdhouse Cinema: Masque of the Red Death

Prince Prospero and his followers celebrate darkness within their rainbow-hued castle...

We have an exciting film to discuss this week and a perfect seasonal selection for Halloween. For us, it’s a return to the filmography of B-movie wizard Roger Corman and the work of legendary actor Vincent Price. It’s also an Edgar Allen Poe adaptation – perhaps the finest one that Corman did, as well as one of the most well regarded films he directed. It's 1964's The Masque of the Read Death.

The stars really align on this one. The budget was there, the time was there, the cast was terrific and there's Nicholas Roeg with cinematographer credits. It's a real treat that holds up well to modern viewing.

The trailer isn't great for this one, so I'm going to share a great scene from the film instead:

We'll have more seasonal delights for you this October on Weirdhouse Cinema. In the meantime, be sure to check out the merch store and follow us on Letterboxd! All the movies we've covered are listed there in our list and you can click "read notes" to get links to the individual episodes posted here.
