May the nuts be with you...
We have another Weirdhouse Cinema episode for your Friday and it's 1978's Message From Space, directed by Kinji Fukasaku and starring Vic Morrow and Sonny Chiba. Following hot on the heels of 1977's world-changing Star Wars, this Japanese film is at once a clear attempt to cash in on George Lucas' success and a lovely, weird exercise on its own. It's a disco-infused space opera full of cheerful performances, outrageous costuming choices, space nuts and a sailing ship that traverses the cosmos.
This one was a lot of fun to watch -- and I actually got to watch it on Prime Party with a handful of Weirdhouse listeners. We'll try to do that again sometime. In the meantime, if you want to get ahead and make sure you've seen the NEXT movie selection for Weirdhouse Cinema, it will be the MST3K-imortalized Boggy Creek II: And the Legend Continues. Like Message From Space, it's currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
P.S. That mix with the "rings of Saturn" sample in it that I mention in the episode is the following 2012 mix by S>>D:
You can listen to Weirdhouse Cinema every Friday in the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast feed.
