Dive into one of the greatest Russian holiday fantasy films of all time...
This week on Weirdhouse Cinema, we discuss the classic 1960s Russian fairy tale spectacular Morozko, better known to many fans as Jack Frost. It’s a tale of love, evil stepmothers, mushroom wizards, animal transformations, Baba Yaga and of course the Russian personification of winter, Morozko or Ded Moroz.
As we discuss, the film is a long-time holiday viewing staple in many Eastern European countries -- and of course in Russia -- but many Western viewers know it best from MST3k. It's a fun MST episode, but the movie is perfectly enjoyable un-riffed and -- more to the point -- the MST3K lacks the vibrant colors found in recent re-releases of the film. Here, see for yourself:
That's it! This was the last new Weirdhouse Cinema episode of 2021 -- but we'll have a couple of re-runs over the next couple of weeks and return with a NEW episode on January 7. So stay tuned. In the meantime, you can find all WHC episodes cataloged on this website and you can even buy Weirdhouse (and STBYM) merch right here.
