Weirdhouse Cinema: Not of This Earth

Updated: Jan 5, 2021

Roger Corman's 1957 low-budget alien thriller...

Happy New Year! While the core episodes of STBYM are on repeat this week, we have a new episode of Weirdhouse Cinema for you -- and it's a tale of alien blood harvesters in Los Angeles from a living legend of B-cinema innovation: Not of This Earth!

This one came out as a double feature with Corman's more famous '57 film, Attack of the Crab Monsters -- but this one's not to be overlooked. For such a low-budget film, it does a pretty good job rolling out a weird concept and some pretty solid suspense towards the end. Paul Birch is great as a menacing alien blood harvester and Beverly Garland feels ahead of her times in many ways.

There's also an excellent alien bioweapon towards the end of the picture that may seem a bit lame in film stills, but works quite well in the film itself.

You can watch Not of This Earth anywhere you get your digital media, as well in physical Corman DVD packs. Weirdhouse Cinema published every Friday in the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast stream.

As for the next episode of Weirdhouse Cinema? We're undecided! We're behind on recordings due to the holidays, so we'll have to figure something out on Monday. But we a lot of films in the spreadsheet -- and are always eager for suggestions. You can hit us up at contact (at) stufftoblowyourmind.com.

UPDATE: I can now tell you that the next episode of Weirdhouse Cinema will cover the 1932 film Doctor X.
