Weirdhouse Cinema: Phase IV

All ant species to unite against their enemies, which includes us...

This week (technically last week) on Weirdhouse Cinema, we consider the most ambitious ant movie of all time in 1974's Phase IV. It's the only full-length film from graphic designer Saul Bass and it stars Nigel Davenport, Michael Murphy, Lynne Frederick and tons of ants.

This one really caught me off guard. While it has plenty of expected B-movie touches, this is a well-crafted sci-fi movie that speaks in colors, speaks to the ants and ends in a whopper of a psychedelic ending. As I mentioned in the episode, try to snag a copy of this with the "lost ending" included, because it's even WEIRDER -- a full-blown heroic dose of cinematic surrealism.

Oh yeah, and the score is great on this one too! Waxworks Records put out a beautiful vinyl edition. Anyway, let's move on to the episode and the trailer.

Here's some of the related media we refer to in the episode:

Remember that the show now has its own Instagram page (linked at the top of this website) and you can follow the link tree there to access the STBYM podcast feed as well as merch. Next time on Weirdhouse Cinema, we return to the 1940s for The Beast With Five Fingers.
