The biggest Bollywood Horror Film of them all...
On Weirdhouse Cinema, we love to return again and again to some of our favorite genres, actors and cinematic traditions -- but we also love to break out and experience all new psychotronic film visions. This week's episode is our first foray into Indian cinema and my very first full Bollywood film viewing. It's the Ramsay brothers' Purana Mandir from 1984 and experts consider it to be the most important Indian horror movie of all time.
We watched these via the fabulous BOLLYWOOD HORROR limited edition box set from Mondo Macabro, which Atlanta's Videodrome has on their shelves. A number of the special features in this set helped me get up to speed on Bollywood horror, as well as such articles as this BBC article about Anirudh Agarwal, who plays the evil Samri. And here's a Medium article about Pradeep Kumar, who plays Thakur Ranvir Singh and here's an Indian Express article about Sadashiv Amrapurkar.
Up next on Weirdhouse Cinema? We return to the 1950s with Creature with the Atom Brain. In the meantime, be sure to check out the merch store and follow us on Letterboxd! All the movies we've covered are listed there in our list and you can click "read notes" to get links to the individual episodes posted here.
