El Santo, a time machine and the Prince of Darkness...
Today on Weirdhouse Cinema, we discuss our first selection from Mexico: the 1969 supernatural lucha film Santo in the Treasure of Dracula.
This one is tons of fun for a variety of reasons. For starters, it's El Santo versus Dracula, but if that's not enough we also have metaphysical time travel and a saga involving lost films and secret European nudity.
The version of the film we watched is the restored color version released by VCI Entertainment. As we discuss in the episode, this is the color version with added nude scenes that was long thought lost. The black and white family-friendly cut that was released in Mexico has long been available, but the film quality is far better in the color version.
Now for some of the other bits of media mentioned in the episode. Here's the Santo unmasking video I mention:
Here's the lucha match that we discuss: Los Gringos Locos (Art Barr and Eddy Guerrero) vs. El Hijo Del Santo and Octagón (11/6/94)
What's in store for next week's episode of Weirdhouse Cinema? We'll be time traveling back to the 90s for 1992's Split Second starring Rutger Hauer. It's currently streaming on Prime, but I don't think I'll have time to put together a Prime Party for this one. We'll try to do another one soon, though. In the mean time, you can catch Weirdhouse Cinema every Friday in the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast feed, wherever you get your podcasts.
