Weirdhouse Cinema: Seconds

John Frankenheimer's terrifying 1966 rumination on desire and liberation...

Today's movie is one where all the pieces just come together perfectly. Seconds rises on stellar direction and cinematography, a great adaptation of the source material and a terrific cast top-to-bottom.

While the chance to discuss a film from cinematographer James Wong Howe initially attracted us to this one, everyone else brings their absolute A-game, including Rock Hudson, for whom this movie stood as a drastic departure from the sort of romantic feel-good movies he'd been known for previously. The result is a deeply contemplative, claustrophobic and disturbing movie. I've seen the term "Kafkaesque" used in reference to Seconds and I think that's a fair assessment.

Up next on Weirdhouse Cinema? We have a few different selections high up on the list, including our first Bollywood horror film, but we'll have to see if we can get our hands on the disc. In the meantime, be sure to check out the merch store and follow us on Letterboxd! All the movies we've covered are listed there in our list and you can click "read notes" to get links to the individual episodes posted here.
