Weirdhouse Cinema: Ship of Monsters

Women are from Venus and monsters are from everywhere else...

Are you ready for a 1960 Mexican sci-fi comedy involving multiple alien monsters, space vampires, interplanetary politics and several música norteña songs?

If so, you're ready for Ship of Monsters (La nave de los monstruos), an obscure but absolutely wonderfully fun film.

A robot falls in love with a jukebox. The monsters include a reptilian cyclops, a spider beast, a brainiac and an alien skeleton. There's even a surprise space vampire!

As we discuss in the episode, the charm of this one really holds up -- both the comedy and the wonderful monsters.

Sadly, there are not a lot of great places to stream it right now. Though if you look around on YouTube, you'll find some options -- and you can grab it on this DVD.

Let's go ahead and have the full episode and some footage from the film...

Now, as discussed, the star of this picture is Eulalio González, aka El Piporro, a legend of the Música norteña genre and a big name from the golden age of Mexican cinema. We discuss him a bit, but I want to share some of his music here:

What's up next on Weirdhouse Cinema? I regret to inform you that it is 1987's Spookies, the worst movie we've watched for the show. But it's still a fun conversation! So tune in.
