Weirdhouse Cinema: Shock Waves

We venture into the deep end of horror to complete the Florida Movie trilogy...

We complete our trilogy of Florida Movies with the 1977 nazi zombie film Shock Waves --- a fun and surprisingly effective low-budget horror movie.

While it's not SET in Florida, it's certainly filmed in Florida and checks off numerous boxes on the Florida Movie card:

  • Oppressive Floridian nature

  • Floridian ruins

  • Electronic music

  • Fish tanks

  • An dark ending

Plus, it's just a well constructed horror film with tremendous monster designs, solid acting and a top-shelf electronic score.

It features small roles by horror legends Peter Cushing and John Carradine, but the standout performance is Brooke Adams, who plays the protagonist Rose. The kid from Flipper (Luke Halpin) also stars.

I'll share the related media links and embed below, but let's hit the Weird House Cinema episode and the Shock Waves trailer first.

As for the score by Richard Einhorn, again, you can pick up an amazing vinyl edition from Wax Work Records. But there's also an unofficial stream of it on Soundcloud if you need a preview:

The New York Times article that features Einhorn is A Hearing Aid That Cuts Out All the Clatter by John Tierney -- and you can explore Einhorn's website right here.

Oh, and the Biltmore Hotel? The official website is right here and you can read about its history at Golfpass.com. I would love to hear from anyone who has both stayed her AND seen Shock Waves.

You can digitally rent or buy the film most places -- and you can stream it as part of the Full Moon Features channel. The Blue Underground Blu-ray edition is also highly recommended. As for next week, we're going straight to Charles Band's Trancers 2.
