An hallucinogenic jaunt into the realm of myth...
We’re kicking off the new year on Weirdhouse Cinema with two firsts: our first full-length animated film and our first Hungarian film! It's Marcell Jankovics' mind-bending 1981 film Fehérlófia, known to English-speaking audiences as Son of the White Mare.
No single film still can prepare you for this film, as it's a film of constant transformation and pulsation. It is as hallucinogenic an animated film I have ever seen and I rank it up there with the likes of Nausicaa and Fantastic Planet in terms of films that really made me rethink what was possible in animation.
Son of the White Mare is out now in beautifully restored quality on Blu-ray, but you can also stream it via the Criterion Channel. A reminder: Weirdhouse Cinema comes out every Friday in the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast feed. The show also now has its own Instagram account, and we have a little bit of merch for WHC in the store.
What are we covering next week? Well, we're still working that out. But next week SHOULD be a full week of new content in the feed. Stay tuned...
