"I will have killed nine times in my life, Dr. Vesalius. How many murders can be attributed to you?"
This week's Weirdhouse Cinema selection is tons of fun: 1971's "The Abominable Dr. Phibes," the story of cinema's most stylish serial revenge killer/super-villain anti-hero. It's a weird one, stuffed with amazing sets, weird scenes and one of Vincent Price's most memorable roles.
I highly recommend this film -- a highly engaging weird romp with plenty of charm. As we discuss, it's also sort of the whimsical predecessor to such dreary theme-kill slogs as Se7en and the SAW movies. The good Dr. Phibes has both John Doe and Jigsaw beat, however, when it comes to style points.
There are a number of additional media clips that we refer to in the episode, from Basil Kirchin's score to the music of Nurse With Wound, so I'm just going to drop stuff in place below:
Reminder that Weirdhouse Cinema has merch in the Stuff to Blow Your Mind Merch shop. Next week we're running some Spring Break re-runs, so Weirdhouse will be a re-wind episode, but we'll be back the week after that with something fresh!
