Weirdhouse Cinema: The Brain Eaters

Great poster, cheap movie!

In this episode of Weirdhouse Cinema, we discuss the 1958 sci-fi movie The Brain Eaters, which doesn’t actually feature brain eating but is still a lot of fun.

The move itself is a bit stiff, the monster quite cheap, but it all revolves around a weird drill ship that has emerged from the inner Earth and we have some fun performances throughout -- including some pre-Trek Leonard Nimoy and an uncredited appearance by future Blade Runner screenwriter Hampton Fancher. There are some other fun cast and crew connections as well.

The POSTER for this film is absolutely beautiful and wall-worthy. I’ve admired it for years but never knew anything about the movie, which – to be clear – doesn’t really feature any vampire women with glowing, exposed brain tissue. Albert Kallis did this one and he is responsible for a LOT of classic movie poster goodness from this period. The blog Monster Brains has a great selection of his work, including his posters for I Was A Teenage Frankenstein, Attack of the Crab Monsters, Invasion of the Saucer Men, Not Of This Earth, It Conquered The World, How To Make a Monster, The Astounding She Monster and so many more. This is the same Alber Kallis of the Albert and Trudy Kallis Foundation, which is responsible for various documentaries.

Next episode is 1985's Billy the Kid and the Green Baize Vampire! Remember that the show now has its own Instagram page (linked at the top of this website) and you can follow the link tree there to access the STBYM podcast feed as well as merch.
