The mid-aughts gothic space opera the world wasn't ready for...
Today on Weirdhouse Cinema, we venture forth into 21st century cinema for only the second time ever with 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick, the epic space opera sequel to the sci-fi horror creature feature Pitch Black. It's an audacious attempt to spin a smaller-scale picture off into a new Lord of the Rings and while it wasn't successful in its initial release, it's a whole lot of fun, features a terrific cast and some splendid sets and costumes. Also, please enjoy the CGI fire dogs and some of the cheesiest lines of dialogue ever committed to the screen. It has something for everyone.
NOTE: UK listeners will need to stream this from the STBYM UK feed.
What's up next on Weirdhouse Cinema? We'll likely retreat back into the 20th century. In the meantime, be sure to check out the merch store and follow us on Letterboxd! All the movies we've covered are listed there in our list and you can click "read notes" to get links to the individual episodes posted here.
