Weirdhouse Cinema: The Devil Rides Out

It's British conservatism versus Satanic cultists in this classic Hammer horror film...

It's time for a good old-fashioned devil worship movie on Weirdhouse Cinema, so we're diving into The Devil Rides Out (AKA The Devil's Bride), a 1968 Hammer film that's far more conservative than you might expect given the subject matter and the release year. Directed by Terence Fisher and adapted by Richard Matheson from the novel by Dennis Wheatley. It stars Christopher Lee and Charles Gray as dueling occultists in a tale of high-stakes Satanism.

It's a pretty fun romp that takes itself very seriously and therefore is also good for a few laughs if you're in the mood for it. I will warn you, however, that nothing in the film quite matches the Satanic glory of the above poster art. We didn't bring this up in the episode, but that poster art is also the basis for the album art on Electric Wizard's excellent 2007 album Witchcult Today.

That being said, The Devil Rides Out still packs lots of cultist fun. The Goat of Mendes still shows up, but he doesn't carry a sleeping woman around.

Anyway, let's have the episode and the trailer. This one was a fun episode to record:

Like I said in the episode, the Shout! Factory Blu-ray for this film is most excellent. We rented it from Videodrome. But let's see, we also mention a few different bits of media in the episode that I'll share here:

What's up next on Weirdhouse Cinema? We're still working that out. I ordered an exciting Blu-ray for another Vincent Price film, but we also have plenty of other films on the list -- and we like to mix it up. In the mean time, I set up a Letterboxd profile for the show (complete with a list of all the movies we've covered). We probably won't do much else there beyond updating the list, but it's a fun way to see all the episode topics in a glance. The only other place to really do that is this blog, which is intentionally pretty basic. But check the links at the top and remember you can get Weirdhouse merch if you so desire.
