Crank the heavy metal and open a dimensional portal in 1987's The Gate...
This week on Weirdhouse Cinema, I'm joined by guest co-host David Striepe, co-host of the Talkn' Tofu podcast, for a discussion of the 1987 horror The Gate. It's a movie about kids and demons -- and it's shockingly solid on both fronts. The effects are great, but we also spend a lot of time admiring just how seriously it takes the family and friend dynamics of children. The kid actors include Stephen Dorff and Jennifer Irwin, both of whom went on to pretty impressive grownup acting careers.
We can't heap enough praise on the kids in this one, so the first non-trailer embed for you here is Terry's awesome heavy metal lip-sync scene, but I also want to feature some of the sounds and music video images from the work of Eva Everything, whose music and music video for the 1984 single "No Pressure" is playing during the film's opening dream sequence.
Next week on Weirdhouse Cinema, Seth will join me as co-host as we discuss the 1988 surrealist dark fantasy film Alice by Czech stop-motion animation master Jan Švankmajer. In the meantime, be sure to check out the merch store and follow us on Letterboxd! All the movies we've covered are listed there in our list and you can click "read notes" to get links to the individual episodes posted here.
