Weirdhouse Cinema: The Green Slime

Rubber monsters attack in this 1968 sci-fi Japanese/US co-production...

The Green Slime had the misfortune to come out the same year as another film about human space travelers encountering another intelligence in the cosmos: Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. As such, the slime got a bad rap, but behind the groovy theme song and great poster art, there's a fun, surprisingly procedural sci-fi action film with more than a few effective sequences -- despite some of the effects limitations. Its trio of stars (Robert Horton, Richard Jaeckel and Luciana Paluzzi) also do a lot to keep you invested. This is our second film from director Kinji Fukasaku, the other being Message From Space.

What's up next on Weirdhouse Cinema? We'll finally dive into the world of Coffin Joe with 1967's This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse. In the meantime, be sure to check out the merch store and follow us on Letterboxd! All the movies we've covered are listed there in our list and you can click "read notes" to get links to the individual episodes posted here.
