Screaming Mad George co-helms a monster-rich American manga adaptation...
We've mentioned the effects work of synthetic flesh wizard Screaming Mad George on the show before, so we thought it was time to cover his only full-length directorial credit to date: the 1991 American manga adaptation The Guyver. The action a rubber monster meat slap-fest, the comedy is DOA but the cast is super fun and the monsters are absolutely above reproach -- so it makes for a delightfully entertaining film. You get to watch Mark Hamill turn into a giant bug, Michael Berryman shows us his romantic side and David Gale cuts loose with another thoroughly reptilian performance -- and then turns into a giant lizard.
We discuss Screaming Mad George at length, so I thought we'd share some of his music:
What's up next on Weirdhouse Cinema? It shall be the 1963 Japanese sci-fi adventure Atragon, directed by the legendary Ishirô Honda. In the mean time, I set up a Letterboxd profile for the show (complete with a list of all the movies we've covered). We probably won't do much else there beyond updating the list, but it's a fun way to see all the episode topics in a glance. The only other place to really do that is this blog, which is intentionally pretty basic. But check the links at the top and remember you can get Weirdhouse merch if you so desire.
