Lucio Fulci gives us ghosts, mad scientists, blood and visions from beyond...
As Weirdhouse Cinema completes its first journey around the sun, we turn our attention at last to the work of Italian b-cinema master Lucio Fulci. In The House by the Cemetery, he gives us a little bit of everything.
It's a slasher. It's a haunted house movie. There are ghosts. There's a monster. There's a mystery to be solved.
Dr. Freudstein has to be one of my one of my favorite movie mad scientists -- or at least a favorite among the sub-genre of mad scientists that turns themselves into grotesque monsters. He's reduced to a cellar-dwelling slasher who reconstitutes his rotting flesh through murder. And we're left with far more questions than answers regarding his research or his fate.
The child actors are also a tremendous amount of fun in this one, as we discuss in the episode, with both Giovanni Frezza and Silvia Collatina providing memorable performances.
