It's time for a little cattle muto-sploitation cinema with Greydon Clark...
This week on Weirdhouse Cinema, we follow-up our Stuff to Blow Your Mind episode on The Cattle Mutilation Panic of the 1970s with 1980's The Return, a film centered around cattle mutilations in rural New Mexico. As we discuss in the episode, Alan Rudolph's 1982 film Endangered Species, is perhaps a better muto movie and one that leans into the government conspiracy theory side of the panic, but The Return is arguably a weirder and stranger movie to try and process.
But both films have a great cast and The Return gives us performances by Jan-Michael Vincent, Cybill Shepherd, Martin Landau, Vincent Schiavelli and Raymond Burr. Warning that the trailer contains spoilers.
Now, if you want to hear our episode of Stuff to Blow Your Mind on the Cattle Mutilation Panic, I'm going to include it below as well -- followed by the trailer for Endangered Species.
It was fun to return to the filmlography of Greydon Clark as his OTHER 1980s alien film was Without Warning, which served as the pilot and first episode of Weirdhouse Cinema!
We'll have more seasonal delights for you this October on Weirdhouse Cinema. In the meantime, be sure to check out the merch store and follow us on Letterboxd! All the movies we've covered are listed there in our list and you can click "read notes" to get links to the individual episodes posted here.
