In which we kick off three weeks of 3-D movies...
In today's episode we begin three weeks of 3-D films on Weirdhouse Cinema, starting with just about the most 3-D film you could ask for: 1983's Treasure of the Four Crowns, a vaguely Raiders-esque international co-production starring Tony Anthony.
Anthony and his team actually ignited the entire 1980s 3-D boom with their earlier picture, 1981's Comin' at Ya! It's a title that could have easily applied to this film as well, given its stupendous obsession with shoving any and everything at the viewer's face in three dimensions.
It's pure spectacle, punctuated by ludicrous special effects and delightfully uninspired casting. You've never SEEN such a forgettable heist crew, and you've never seen them hang from ropes for such an extended climbing sequence.
It's our second film to feature a score by famed composer Ennio Morricone, but it's not his best work. Oh, and that Fist Fighter movie I referenced is right here, in case you want to see the poster.
What's next on Weirdhouse Cinema? We'll discuss the pivitol 1953 horror film House of Wax. In the meantime, be sure to check out the merch store and follow us on Letterboxd! All the movies we've covered are listed there in our list and you can click "read notes" to get links to the individual episodes posted here.
